Scholastic Scholastic Check out @RandomActsofLit Started as a teacher's simple idea: carry kids books w/you to give wherever you are! bit.ly/sjJyzL Apparently the only way to get seen in the "Wild West World" of the Internet is to link to everyone and have them link back!! Well, without completely selling out to corporate America, I am now linking around the world and watching the explosion of hits on Google Analytics. I hope you are not offended. My original intent and idea are still pure and unadulterated. I simply keep a book in my rucksack and hand it out. Quietly, anonymously, and with no real interaction except to hand the book over. Hopefully you are doing the same. In case you are wondering, I have not seen a dime of revenue for the links I have posted, but if I do, I will buy more books to hand out!! Awesome!!
Big thanks to the librarian's I have spoken too about this project. It looks like a the giant ball is beginning to roll!! Thanks to everyone for your support _This is an excellent idea. I'm a life long book lover and I mourn the increasing lack of interest in books and reading. I just moved here not long ago, but I did live in a trailer park in a poor area in W. Va. I often hunt out used books in the Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc., I took to giving some of the local kids books to take home. I found an old encyclopedia set in a garage and handed some of them out too, remembering how I used to look at them when I was a kid. Unfortunately, the kids I saw took those books home, threw them down, and as far as I know never read them. But they always had a full library of video games. Discouraging, but it's still worth the try, you never know when you might start that spark.
Two more books on the train this morning.....Now I am carrying at least 2-3 thin books to increase the impact!! Keep it up everyone!!
What a great idea! I've given out little bags of crayons and notebook paper to "antsy" kids in doctors' waiting rooms, but never thought about carrying books with me. I'm retired and have quite a collection at home from my former classroom library - many more than my grandchildren need when they visit.
Looks like we are finally getting seen!! It seems there are some powerful forces now at work to help us grow. Please continue to forward this to everyone you know. Let's get everyone we can handing out books!!
Thank you, Harvey (and Julie) for this wonderful idea. My daughter is 17 now and I still haven't parted with most of her children's books - so many great memories of reading and exploring together. This might be one way to make it possible for me to part with her hundreds of gently used books!
I would really like to help publicize this idea but from your blog post I'm having trouble following what it is you want people to do. Are we supposed to collect books to give out on our own during commutes? Are we supposed to give books to teachers who then put in students' backpacks for the students to take home? Or are the students' supposed to give out the books? Or are the teachers' giving out the books? It would be more helpful if the intentions were clearer. Thanks.
